Free walk-in tax prepa- ration by AARP Tax-Aide Foundation will begin the first week in February for Wind- ward O‘ahu. No appointments will be accepted. Intake forms will be completed at the tax sites, and taxes will be pre- pared while clients wait in designated areas. Taxpayers are asked to respect the ad- vertised hours of each site and bring all necessary tax doc- uments, government-issued photo IDs and verification of Social Security numbers for all people who will be claimed on the tax return.
Even if people have no tax filing requirement, filing an annual tax return is recom- mended to provide security against Social Security identi- ty theft, as unused Social Se- curity numbers are often the target of identity thieves. In addition, federal credits may be available to workers in the Earned Income Tax Credit; filers who claim children or other dependents may be eli- gible for the Child Tax Credit and the Child & Dependent Care Credit; and college stu- dents or their parents may be eligible for education credits.
Many Hawai‘i residents also qualify for state Food Excise Tax or Low Income Renter credits or the Hawai‘i Earned Income Credit.

Taxpayers should use the sign-up sheet outside the library. The third site is at KEY Project at 47-200 Waihe‘e Road in Kāne‘ohe. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 3 to April 14. There will be no early entry to the tax area, and no calls to the KEY Project office. The site will be closed April 7 for Good Friday.
Attendees are encouraged to wear masks when close to volunteers and others outside their household and immunize if recommended by their med- ical provider. Three Wind- ward Tax-Aide sites will open this year. The Kailua Church of the Nazarene site is at 536 Oneawa St. from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays from Feb. 6 to April 17. Taxpayers are asked not to call the church
