Girl From Windward-based Troop Achieves Eagle Scout Status

 Maia Payne is the first girl of Windward O‘ahu- based Troop 311 to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. She was recognized at her Eagle Scout Court of Hon- or on July 31. Maia has been involved with Boy Scouts of America for more than three years, since join- ing in early 2019 when the organization first opened to girls. She was awarded the gold palm for obtaining an additional 10 merit badges beyond the 21 merit badges required for Eagle rank.
“In the future, I hope to attend college and contin- ue the pursuit of science and learning. I have always been interested in the sub- ject and I think that various fields of science can accom- plish lots of good and also be interesting to learn,” she explains. “I also plan to stay active in Scouts for as long as I can, and help my fellow Scouts through their personal scouting journey.”
She founded her school’s debate club last year and also serves as the treasur- er for Kalāheo’s Nation- al Honor Society. She is also part of her school’s cross-country, tennis and track and field teams. Addi- tionally, this fall semester, Maia will be taking a col- lege credit course through University of Hawai‘i’s Windward Community College and the Pacific American Foundation to study marine science as part of the Kilo Kai Marine
