Castle High School’s Luke Kaneshiro Vaults To Champion Ranking In His Sport
5-7 at Mililani High School, Kaneshiro won the junior varsity title and followed that up with another golden moment by winning the var- sity competition with a vault of 11 feet, 4 inches and help- ing Castle secure third place overall as a team.
He finished tied for 11th place, along with Castle teammate Logan Yamamo- to, with a vault of 11 feet, 6 inches.
Kaneshiro explains that he hopes to improve his pole-vaulting skills through- out high school, and if he con- tinues to reach new heights worthy of note at league and state competitions, he would be open to pursuing the sport further at the collegiate level.
“Winning both pole vault championships took a lot of hard work, dedication and many failed vaults,” Kane- shiro says. “Throughout the season, the JV championship was something I was work- ing toward and when I was moved up after achieving that to compete for the var- sity championship, getting first place at that level was completely unexpected.”
Kaneshiro explains that the experience made him “very proud to represent my school and the community I live and grew up in,” and that the backing from his family, coaches and support- ers was integral in his rapid ascent within the sport.
“I would like to thank the track coach, Jordan Oue, and my pole vault coaches for getting me to where I am,” Kaneshiro says. “I would also like to thank my teammates for always pushing me to be better and making this sea- son fun. It makes me proud and thankful to represent my loving and supportive family who attend my track meets, especially my papa, Ralph.”
