Windward O‘ahu resident Tam- my Hailiʻōpua Baker has earned one of the greatest honors in theater education. The John F. Ken- nedy Center for the Perform- ing Arts, a world-renowned facility in Washington, D.C., has awarded Baker a Me- dallion of Excellence for her trailblazing vision in Indigenous arts. She is the first recipient from Hawaiʻi. Baker is the founder of Uni- versity of Hawaiʻi at Mā- noa’s inaugural Hawaiian Theatre program. “I’m deep- ly humbled to receive this prestigious award and grate- ful for the John F. Kennedy Center’s recognition of kana- ka maoli artistry in storytell- ing and performing arts,” states Baker. Her husband Kaliko Baker — who is a kumu ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi at UH Mānoa Kawaihuelani Cen- ter for Hawaiian Language — is also an accomplished scholar and storyteller. The power couple co-found- ed Ka Hālau Hanakeaka, a Hawaiian medium theater troupe. Their keiki, Kai- pulaumakaniolono, 24, and Kaneikoliakawahi- neikaʻiukapuomua, 19, both earned Kennedy Center awards at the same virtual ceremony.
