When The ARTS at Marks Garage put out a call for artists to participate in its ICONIC O‘AHU: Buildings, Beaches and Backroads ex- hibit, 37 artists responded and many were Windward resi- dents. It seems that the Wind- ward side is blessed with an abundance of talented artists.

One such is Anna Blair who resides in Kailua and is married to a U.S. Marine. She was raised in Mississippi, so often her work is inspired by her Southern roots. Yet, as a military wife, she has been able to travel the world and is inspired by the nature and cultures that surround her. Her artworks in the ICONIC O‘AHU show have an unusu- al element to them. Instead of painting a piece exclusively with a brush, she embroiders with yarn right onto the can- vas.
Another Kailua-based artist is Dwayne Adams, who can often be seen with his easel along backroads, city streets or beaches painting what catches his eye.
“The image represents a beginning and an end with the sun’s southward travel and its northward travel; and also commemorates the uni- fication of Hawai‘i by King Kamehameha I, the pass be- ing the site of Kamehameha’s 1795 battle to secure O‘ahu,” he says.
“I love the ocean, and this painting is an expression of that,” Blair says.
“After years practicing as a landscape architect, often providing quick sketches in public settings to represent building plans, I settled on watercolor as a prime con- veyance of possible solutions to public projects,” Adams shares.
While The ARTS at Marks Garage has been featuring O‘ahu artists in May, 12 Moloka‘i artists have been adorning the walls and podia of Downtown Art Center one block makai on Nu‘uanu Ave- nue. By taking in both shows,
