baking and hanging out with friends and family.
There, they qualified for the 2022 USA Gymnastics Women’s Developmental Program National Champi- onships in Mesa, Arizona, that will be held May 12-16.
Meanwhile, Cam- ryn won first place on bars, vault and floor, and took home second place all- around with a total score of 37.325.
They are scheduled to compete on May 15. This will be Camryn’s fourth qualifying appearance at the national championships and Cady’s second.
The 16-year-old sisters and best friends began tak- ing recreational gymnastics at the age of 3.
In the regional champi- onships, Camryn won first place on bars and floor, and took home all-around champion honors with a to- tal score of 37.875 out of 40 points.
They currently train five days a week for about 20 hours at Hawaiian Island Twisters in Mapunapu- na and are coached by Joe Rapp and Joel Shugart. In addition, they both contin- ue to excel academically as sophomores at Punahou School, maintaining 3.9 GPAs.

Cady and Camryn live in Kailua with their parents Joelle and Leif, and brother Carson, who will be attend- ing the University of Ore- gon this fall. When they’re not training or studying, the Chiu twins enjoy going to the beach, surfing, shopping,

Cady had an impressive total score of 37.425, also qualifying her for nationals. It requires a minimum score of 35 points and placement in the top seven.
Both Cady and Cam- ryn have their sights set on competing at the collegiate level and hope to make an impression on the college recruiters in attendance at the national championships. They have previously at- tended gymnastics camps at many colleges on the main- land and will continue to do so this summer.
Cady won first place all- around champion with a total score of 37.375 and placed first on beam.
“I want to do NCAA gym- nastics in college to be part of something bigger than myself. My whole life, I’ve been competing as an in- dividual athlete,” Camryn states. “NCAA gymnastics would be my first real op- portunity to contribute to a team. Watching the NCAA gymnasts’ enthusiastic sup- port for one another is some- thing I would love to expe- rience firsthand. My goal is to excel both in the gym and academically.”
“Contrary to popular be- lief, I’m not a tiger mom. From the very start the girls have been extremely self-motivated athletes who love their sport. Gymnastics is extremely demanding both physically and mentally. It teaches them to persevere, to get up every time you fall and try again,” states Jo- elle. “Their goal is to become Division 1 college athletes. Our goal as their parents, is to make sure they develop into well-rounded, thought- ful adults.”
