Plans For A Christmas Caravan, Lights Convoy

in Kāne‘ohe to highlight and bring the community together.”
The Kāne‘ohe Christmas Caravan is slated for Satur- day, Dec. 4, which is usual- ly the day of the Kāne‘ohe Christmas Parade. Instead of onlookers gathering along Kamehameha High- way as would be the case during the parade, the car- avan will take the celebra- tion to neighborhoods. The group tested the caravan route on Veterans Day as five vehicles from Acts of Random Kindness started at Kahalu‘u Regional Park, were joined along the way by vehicles from Windward Classic Cars, and were waved into the finish by the Kāne‘ohe Lions Club at Windward City Shop- ping Center. The Kāne‘ohe Caravan allows neighbors to celebrate safely in their front yards as the proces- sion passes by.
“It is free for anyone to join. The only limit is to those who are willing and have time to participate,” Lam says. “Expectations and safety guidelines are disseminated ahead of time and we are all individual- ly responsible for our ac- tions. One bad actor can ruin it for everyone, but we also can collectively be part of the process in mak- ing a safe, family friendly event.”

Additionally, a Kāne‘ohe Christmas Lights Convoy is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 19, to showcase neighbors with brightly lit and deco- rated homes.
“My favorite part last year was seeing the joy on the faces of the kids trying to find the caravan on their bikes,” Lam con- tinues. “Kāne‘ohe is great place, and we’re blessed with tremendous talent potential. There’s so much that can be accomplished among neighbors willing to work together. Christ- mas is a special time for many of us and I hope it’s a new beginning for many others.”
“Remember, safety first, and drive with aloha,” Lam says. “All vehicles must be street legal with clear sight- lines and working lights. All traffic rules still apply, and there will be no stop- ping of traffic or blocking of intersections. Vehicles will travel in groups of five or less to allow local traf- fic to move between the groups.
“Safety also includes street-side participants, who are reminded not to approach vehicles or step into roadways. City offi- cials are concerned about large gatherings and vio- lations of the social dis- tancing guidelines per the Mayor’s Emergency Proc- lamation.”
Windward Community College alumna Bethany Georges and Gallery ‘Iolani director Toni Martin (front, center with leis) are shown at the Oct. 29 artist reception for HomeGrown, a new exhibition at Windward CC’s Gallery ‘Iolani through Dec. 10. “The dynamics of the HomeGrown artists usher in a new exciting movement showing works of fantasy, color, bold and bright images not seen in such abundance during the past few decades,” notes Martin, who titled the exhibition HomeGrown to celebrate the coming together of exciting local artists. Three years ago, when Martin invited Georges to collaborate on a new fall 2021 exhibition at the college, Georges said it felt like she had come full circle — a sort of homecoming. As a student, Georges took every art class possible at Windward CC, from color theory to sculpture, printmaking and 2D design, and figure drawing and painting, to gallery design and management — some up to three times each. Her experiences led her to a career of art commissions, gallery showings and large-scale murals at venues such as POW! WOW! Hawai‘i. Among the other Windward CC alumni featured are Shar Tuiasoa (Punky Aloha) and Colin Ota. Gallery ‘Iolani is located adjacent to Palikū Theatre in the Hale Pālanakila complex.
