were actually at Kailua In- termediate. They were very focused and fulfilled every- thing they promised.”
they spent the whole day, helping different teachers getting their rooms together, cleaning, etc.,” she recalls.
“Completing our Silver Award was very fulfilling. Every bookshelf we deliv- ered was greatly appreciat- ed by the teachers ... and it was so rewarding to be able to give back to them,” says Uehara.
Being Girl Scouts, the now-14-year-olds, decided to use this knowledge to formulate a plan for their Silver Award Project. The Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette (Girl Scout in sixth, seventh or eighth grade) can achieve.
“We used monies earned from selling Girl Scout cookies to purchase the sup- plies at our local hardware store and measured, sanded, built and painted custom- made shelves. We were able to help seven teachers and hope that our bookshelves made a small difference while those teachers contin- ue to make a big one.”
“The Silver Award re- quired us to find an issue we care about in our commu- nity, develop a project that will make a difference and dedicate at least 50 hours towardthatproject,”Ueha- ra explains.
“Our project took us three yearstocompletefromcon- cept to delivery. We con- structed and built the book- shelves ourselves with help from our parents. It was a great learning experience and we had fun using power tools, sanders and painting.”
Troop leader Ganiko pointed out that COVID prolonged the process as a lot of coordination was done remotely. Monies earned through Girl Scout cookie sales helped fund the proj- ect, which cost more than $1,000 for lumber and other supplies.

“They went above and beyond. They fulfilled (re- quests for) every teacher that asked for one,” says Dee Takeno, curriculum co- ordinator at Maunawili Ele- mentary School, adding that she hopes that other kids follow Uehara’s and Gan- iko’s examples.
“I think they learned valu- able life skills, how to read a tape measure, using simple hand tools: (a) nail gun and power sander,” Ganiko says.
“Sarah wants to do her Gold Award, which is the highest award for Girl Scouts,” says the elder Ganiko.
“As a mom, I’m proud of them for helping others,” she adds.
