Group Aims To Keep Hā‘iku Stairs
Last week, The Friends of Ha‘ikū Stairs sent an open let- ter addressed to the Honolulu City Council, Mayor Rick Blangiardi and city managing director Mike Formby outlin- ing its opposition to the clos- ing of the stairs, also known as Stairway to Heaven.
The plan as outlined in- cludes round-the-clock se- curity; issuing of citations to trespassers; the formation of a security group to include neighbors, HPD, private security, the operator and FOHS; and fencing and se- curity cameras with night vision capability.
In the letter, the group not- ed that the stairs are “a one-of- a-kind recreational, cultural and educational treasure.”

“Ha‘ikū Stairs is a very safe hike,” he states. “There has never been a serious accident or death resulting from an ac- cident on the stairs. Reports of rescues from Ha‘ikū Stairs are almost always related to hikers getting lost or injured while hiking on the more dan- gerous Moanalua trail.”
