Q.We recently had a family reunion with about 30 members of the family of all ages. The highlight of the reunion was a picnic at a local park with all the kids having a great time playing ball, etc. We noticed, however, that my mom seemed to have a hard time understanding what was going on. She didn’t hear what her
grandchildren were saying so they finally gave up and stopped talking to her. I know this made her feel like she was being ignored. We think it might be her hearing. What should we do?
A.It is quite possible that her hearing is the culprit. These types of large family gatherings
are difficult for people with hearing loss. The first step is for her to have a thorough hearing evaluation by a qualified audiologist. The audiologists at Ko‘olau Audiology & Hearing Aid Services will review test results and make appropriate recommendations. Although this sometimes means a referral to an ear specialist, often we
