Hawai‘i’s Carissa Moore Surfs To Olympic Gold
It’s quite a coincidence that, at the time of this writing, surfing’s big Olympic debut just finished up (Monday, July 26, in Hawaiʻi).
Taking the bronze med- al was Japan’s very own 20-year-old Amuro Tsuzuki. She’s getting the job done on the World Surf League Championship Tour and looks to be here to stay. I must say, Japan did a fantas- tic job hosting, and the coun- try is loaded with talented wave riders.

It was a wild three-day ride all the way to gold. The surfing competition started on day one of the Olympics and didn’t stop till we got the gold. Indeed, a large tropical cyclone named Nepartak — swirling off Japan — sent big storm surf on finals day. Our surfing Olympians were up for the challenge.
At any rate, it’s still a win- win for the USA and Ha- waiʻi. In fact, having surfing in the Olympics is a win for the entire sports world. Surf- ing requires superb balance, strength and power. On the men’s side, it was another reigning 2019 world champ, like Carissa, taking the gold home ... to Brazil! Italo Ferreira obliterated the crazy storm surf with high airs and hard carves that would

(Note: the Olympics does not distinguish or sepa- rate the 50th state for obvious reasons, though it has been a longtime tradition within our “sport of kings” to give the Aloha State unique status: The best, most challenging waves; the birthplace of surf- ing; Duke Kahanamoku, etc.)
