Hida, with the support of wife Yvette, would go on to give $30,000 of his own money over the next decade to the cause. That, combined with his company’s matching donation policy, brought the total to $60,000.

harder to escape poverty.” While Hida calls it his assignment, he stresses that this is a group effort. Many at Windward Church of the Nazarene help with Maji Project: Afrika’s work, es- pecially the fundraiser, by providing logistical and ad- ministrative support, and do- nations of items that will be
“Our youth pastor, Tim Cruz, spoke on the rich young ruler who asked Jesus what must he do to go to heaven,” Hida states.
Maji Project: Afrika has been through several itera- tions over the years, shifting to where communities need it, and where those needs can be met in a timely and efficient matter. At first, the group fundraised to build wa- ter wells in Haiti. Then, after learning of a famine in East Africa, Hida’s pastor, Jerry Appleby, connected him with Nazarene missionary John Watton, who was working to bring clean water to Burkina Faso. In 2017, after partner- ing with Mutowa, the focus evolved to what it is today.
Mutowa receives requests from villages that need wa- ter and once the group has
The group’s funds mostly go to water wells, however, it has also provided for other causes, such as sending mon- ey to Sierra Leone to help with the cleanup efforts after the mudslides that killed hun- dreds there in 2017.
“In his message, pastor Tim told us in terms of the world (basically), ‘if you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the world.’
“At a recent well in Zam- bia, we did not use up the al- lotted $8,000, so we used the remaining funds and added a few thousand more to finish off the building of a school,” Hida adds.

who had since moved on to a church in Kahului, held their own fundraisers in support of the group. Quite a few have made monetary donations that help push the organiza- tion closer to its goal of help- ing all who ask for it to get the clean water that they need.
Hida then remembered an article he’d read about a former tennis player, Johan Kriek, who founded an orga- nization called Global Water Foundation.
“I believe that water is one of — if not the key— things to turn around poverty. When people have to use compro- mised water — (such as) streams that animals use — people, often women and chil- dren, can get sick. Many die.”
