Plan For Past-due Bills
Delinquent Hawaiian Electric cus- tomer accounts that would normally face disconnection will instead by en- rolled in a 12-month payment plan to keep the lights on. Affected custom- ers will see higher “current charges” when the first of 12 installments ap- pears in bills starting this month.
Customers will receive a notice with their bill when the payment plan starts that explains how the arrange- ment works, including instructions on how to opt out. The bills will include information on the current charges, plus the installment amount.
The moratorium on disconnec- tions set any the Public Utilities Commission ended on May 31; col- lection activity resumes in July for past-due Hawaiian Electric custom- ers who are not already enrolled in a payment plan.
Those with past-due balances may visit hawaiianelectric.com/ paymentarrangement to learn about payment options and submit a re- quest. In addition, customers who are experiencing hardship due to the pandemic can learn about available assistance from the government and nonprofits at hawaiianelectric. com. Hawaiian Electric does not administer these programs, but it does work with many of the agen- cies listed.
The automatic enrollment affects about 3% of Hawaiian Electric’s residential and smaller commercial customers whose accounts meet the threshold for disconnection — and who either have not contacted the company about their past-due bal- ance or are not currently enrolled in a payment plan.
