Arakawa notes there are others who are important to Pali Lanes’ history, including Rosemarie Griggs of WINGs, a group that facilitated bowl- ing outings for special needs kids. Another person is Ione Gumpfer, who was actually there when Pali Lanes first opened on May 20, 1961.
“For our bowling commu- nity, we have a nine-pin no- tap challenge on the first and third Sundays of the month from 6 to 9 p.m.,” Arakawa states.
“Pali Lanes opened back in 1961 to great fanfare,” he adds.
He says Pali Lanes was a venue where the community came to celebrate: baby lūʻau, graduations, family reunions and more.
“We had many members of the public come, including the governor of Hawai‘i at the time. For many years, Pali Lanes was the home of many leagues.”
She was also a state junior champion and represented Pali Lanes at nationals in Washington, D.C.
