Over the years, the Mōʻiliʻili site expanded through renovation and new buildings to fill the limited, hilly space bor- dered by King Street and the freeway off-ramp. A two-story veterinary ser- vices hospital was added in 2016 but space is tight and animals in crates some- times line the corridors.
Based on the needs recog- nized at Mōʻiliʻili and shelter best practices, the new facility aims to avoid spreading dis- ease and to minimize animals’ stress. It includes soft-close kennels — fewer banging gates! — plus superior air circulation and drainage for kennels and play yards, and larger spaces for animal ex- ercise. An on-site community dog park will open later this year as well.

“The new campus will provide essential programs and services including spay/neuter, education, outreach rescue response and adoptions,” Neubauer continues.
One challenge to pet own- ership is finding pet-friend- ly housing. Many apartment and rental homes do not al- low pets. Humane Society staffers say this is among the most common reasons people have to surrender pets.
