Kapolei-based Nonprofit Honors Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i
February is Mahina ‘Ōle- lo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Lan- guage Month) and, to cele- brate, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, along with other Native Ha- waiian organizations, will host Ola Ka ʻI, or Hawai- ian language fairs, around Hawai‘i, including in West O‘ahu.
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at Ka Makana Ali‘i. At- tendees can expect a day of student performances, story- telling, make-and-take sta- tions, games, informational booths and a Hawaiian lan- guage speech competition for students in grades K-12.

   “Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i is an important opportunity to spotlight ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i and encourage more peo- ple to speak Hawaiian and have spaces and occasions to celebrate and use it,” states Kūhiō Lewis, CEO of CNHA. “Forty years ago, there were less than 50 ʻōpio (youth) fluent in ‘ōlelo Ha- wai‘i, where our language was nearly extinct. According to CNHA, Ola Ka ʻI, which translates to “language thrives,” brings together the community to revitalize and normalize the use of ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i. The Hawaiian language immer- sive format is a signature component of Ola Ka ʻI, de- signed to engage the grow- ing number of school-aged children and families at- tending Hawaiian language schools in Hawai‘i.
