Summer Surf Season Concludes With Epic Oceanfest
The grand finale of the summer was, of course, the Duke’s Oceanfest. It scored amazing waves for pretty much all eight days. The epic south-southwest swell came in on day one and kept going and going, like the Energizer Bunny. With more than 15 events, this iconic ocean fes- tival is truly special.
Robinson, was Stone Mill- er. The fastest female of the bunch was Leila Nasral- lah from Honolulu with a time of 17:32. This 5-foot, 8-inch, 16-year-old phen- om is writing her own tick- et to college and a lifetime of success. Nasrallah also surfs very well, dives and hangs out at the beach with friends.
The Outrigger Legends Surfing Invitational is al- ways a treat. It’s when a business selects its team and partners up with a legend to surf with, against other teams in a spirit of respect and good will.
waiian Airlines’ team ‘Ehu- kai with longboard champ Kai Sallas. Even a second place is impressive when there are 20 heats of legend teams going for the top spot.
Following are a few winners and a few com- petitions. In the Duke’s Waikīkī Paddleboard and Stand Up Paddleboarding Race, Heath Hemmings, age 52, from Kailua — and son of the legendary surf- er Fred Hemmings — took first place overall. I have to send congratulations also to the North Shore’s big wave warrior Chris Owens who took fifth place at 62 years young. Also, my buddy and Surf News Network report- er Blair Thorndike, age 59, came in a respectable 12th. Huge kudos to all our pad- dleboarders.
Duke Kahanamoku taught us many things, and one of them is the impact of sports on our individual and social lives.Thediscipline, team spirit and friendships last a lifetime.
Special thanks to head organizers Jim Fulton and Chris Colgate for making the Duke’s Oceanfest a huge success.
Winning first place was the Outrigger Waikīkī team with legend Laura Blears. Born in 1951, she was a charismatic, barrier-break- ing surfer in the early 1970s in Honolulu. Blears was a courageous big wave rider andfirstgenerationcompet- itor on the world tour.
Congrats to each and ev- eryone who joined in the fun. You know Duke is smil- ing down and people make it happen.
