AUGUST 17, 2022
    Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
Well, looks like August surf is going to be well below May, June and July.

24, 1890 at Hale‘akalā — the home of Bernice Pauahi Bish- op — in Honolulu, Kingdom of Hawai‘i. Both Duke’s par- ents were direct descendants of Kamehameha I. The family was not royalty but they were prominent nobles. Duke had five brothers and three sisters. All his brothers were compet- itive watermen.
6-foot-1-inch, 190-pound su- perstar athlete had super-sized longevity and a competitive spirit.
So far, we kicked off August with one decent south-southwest swell of 2-3 feet, maybe 4 feet local size — or 4-7 feet face scale — but that was on Aug. 1. Ever since then, it’s pretty much been on a downhill slope. A couple minor bumps are coming, but so far it doesn’t look anything but max head high. Lastly, and maybe most im- portantly, he was and, in many ways, still is — the world’s ambassador of aloha. The love and fellowship he gave is something to be cherished and
hiatus due to the pandemic, the spirit of the legendary wa- terman Duke Kahanamoku will be graced by a gift from Mother Nature. I’m stoked!
Just a few tidbits of history about Duke: Many may as- sume that Duke was his nick- name but Duke was his real given name. He was born Aug.
