JULY 20, 2022
Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
Whoa, did you see how fast July caught up to May and June?
OK, onto the comp scene. The Challenger Series just finished its third out of eight contests this season at the Bal- lito Pro in South Africa. This second tier is just below the first or top tier, the elite Cham- pionship Tour.
As of this writing we are just about to start day one of the Corona Open J-Bay held at Jeffreys Bay’s Supertubes — one of, if not the best right-hand point breaks in the world. This is event No. 9 out of 11 in determining our next world champs.
GOAT’s final competition here at a spot he’s dominat- ed in his long and illustrious career. Slater’s first win was back in 1996, then again in 2003 and 2005. His last win was 14 years ago in 2008. It’s astonishing. Only Aus- tralia’s Mick Fanning has four titles at this world-class venue. I can’t wait.
It was a slow start surfwise for this month — averaging 3 feet — but then big swells from the land Down Under really kicked into gear. Surf hit 4-6 feet or advisory levels. Plus, Mother Nature wasn’t done. She followed up by delivering one of the biggest south swells of the year on July 16-17. Top sets reached the high surf warning thresh- old of 15 feet crest to trough — 8 feet Hawai‘i scale.
On a roll and winning was Rio Waida from Bali, Indone- sia. He’s in the No. 1 slot and looks to be a near shoe-in for the CT in 2023. This guy is bold but humble and has all it takes to make even more history for Indonesia. Good luck!
We are expecting ex- cellent swells for what is likely to be a classic event. The holding period is July 12-21. Note: 11-time world champ Kelly Slater is in this contest — he pulled out of Brazil due to injury.

women. She had her rookie WCT year last year but didn’t make the mid-season cut, so she’s getting the points back on her ledger in hopes of re- joining the WCT 2023. She’s jumped up into the No. 2 spot

And I can’t thank you enough for getting some hang-10, I mean, hang-time, with me here in MidWeek’s West O‘ahu Voice.
An Aussie talent named Molly Picklum won it for the
time Hawai‘i has no men in the top 10, nor women in the top five, in the CS. But the year’s not over by a long shot.
It will be pretty historic if this ends up being The
