Community-minded Company Rides The Wave Of Success

When avid surfer Kayla Pearson and her family re- located to O‘ahu to contin- ue her career with the U.S. Army, she was excited to hit the waves.
The ‘Ewa resident was busy as a mother and her “more than full-time job in the Army,” but carved out She would even shower at the beach to shave some time off her morning rou- tine to maximize time on the water.
One morning following a “dawn patrol” surf ses- sion, she noticed a sign that read “no soaps or shampoo” on the beach shower, and that piqued her curiosity. The budding entrepreneur — whose business dreams she made copies of zoo an- imal prints to sell to friends with the help of her mother — ventured down the path of starting her own business to enhance the beachgoing lifestyle.
After a year of research and development, Surf Soap debuted its ocean-safe shampoo bar, along with the business’ most popu- lar product: a detangling and conditioning balm for salty, sun-kissed hair called Rehab Balm. And, while her formal background is in exercise science, Pear- son embraced the “small, community-minded vibe” in Hawai‘i that is “second to none” while building the business.
“Our mission is to be ocean safe, down to how we create our products, all the way to their packag- ing, which is extensively researched to ensure bio-
degradability or reliable recyclability,” says Pear- son, Surf Soap Co. LLC’s director of development and marketing. “We want our customers to enjoy living a sustainable lifestyle without feeling the pressure to be perfect by removing a lot of those research barriers and creating products that help heal their hair and skin, not just coat it in silicones and unhealthy chemicals.”
Pearson notes that her current goal is to build the business to a point where she can take on more team members and bolster a large Surf Soap family.
“I got into business, in general, to provide a safe working environment for everyone,” she says. “Our ‘community mission’ on our website explains that a lot more in detail. We are also working to get Surf Soap into as many retailers as possible, here and on the mainland as well as Aus- tralia, in order to minimize the emissions that it takes to get our products around the world.”
Pearson emphasizes cus- tomer service as a key as- pect of the business that has allowed Surf Soap to grow.
“We want our customers to feel like family, and we are always more than hap- py to help them with ques- tions or concerns they may have,” she says. “I’ve spent a lot of time on the phone making sure our products and that’s the sort of thing I love! Chatting and learn- ing about everyone is one of my favorite parts of being a business owner.”
