  Aloha surfers and beachgoers, Welcome to Sep- tember’s first surf installment. It’s hard to believe that the meteorological summer of 2021 has just passed. The me- teorological summer is June, July and August, however, for those who thought the first day falls on the summer solstice — June 21 — you’d also be correct, astronomical- ly speaking. Our astronomical summer starts and ends a few weeks later (Sept. 22). So, those of you who just can’t let go of that summer feeling yet, you can go with the astronom- ical summer.

More Southern Swells To Come; Groms Make Waves
The reason for the differ- ence? Meteorological seasons are based on annual tempera- ture cycles, while our astro- nomical seasons are based on the position of Earth relative to the sun.

The iconic T&C Grom Contest recently took place and, if you hadn’t heard, you still won’t be surprised that the event had to go virtual. Normally, it’s held in jam- packed Waikīkī and brim- ming with talent, energy and aloha. The T&C Surf ʻohana (and the competitors) changed course like a pro surfer as the pandemic wave required. They courageously reset their rail and turned this event into a success.
(boys and girls in shortboard and longboard, plus body- board divisions) who submit- ted their footage over eight weeks from early June to the end of July. They came in from all islands. Clips were judged and scored based on the tried-and-true Hawaiʻi SurfingAssociationcriteria.
 However, the really import- ant news is that the southern swells of summer usually don’t stop until late October. Check snnhawaii.com for proof.
In the end, our youth were able to have fun, challenge each other and learn to live the best version of themselves. They won prizes galore, too!
