‘Ewa Beach Mixed Martial Arts School Does It ‘For The Chief ’
BY GINGER KELLER
Louis started this school back in the mid-80s, and it was under Mr. Louis all that time until he passed away about four years ago,” adds Holub. “When he passed away, the senior black belts came to the conclusion that, in order for the school to move forward, we need to become more or- ganized. Right after his death, the vote was taken to turn his school into a nonprofit.”
Instructors — such as Holub and grand master Lee Manibog, who both lead the school — don’t take a pay- check. Monies from the fees go directly toward rent and equipment.
Kajukenbo, an accumula- tion of various martial arts, was created in Hawaiʻi in the late 1940s by Adriano Em- perado and four other martial artists who came together to craft a fighting system that would work best on the street. Decades later, this unique style can be found around the world, with schools in the mainland, France, Portugal and right here in ʻEwa Beach.
The West Oʻahu-based facility is called Leeward Kenpo Karate Association ʻEwa Branch, and meets Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at ʻEwa Community Church (91-1258 Renton Road). It welcomeskeiki,kūpunaand everyone in between, and, along with its teachings of kajukenbo — a word that derives from a mix of karate, judo/jujitsu, kenpo and box- ing — the school also offers Filipino escrima, panantukan and Okinawan weapons. By appointment, it also provides basic self-defense courses.
“It really gives you a good feeling to give back to the young kids because we try to teach the whole mind, body and spirit approach — not just beating the tar out of each other — but being good citizens, being respect- ful to authority and parents, and doing the right thing,” says Holub. “We check their grades and that they’re going to school.

“They came up with a style that would be really, really street-effective to help people protect themselves,” explains professor Robert “Bob” Hol- ub.“So,whattheydidisthat they practiced against each other. If a guy was a judo guy, he would show a judo technique, then the kenpo or Chinese boxing guy would try to defend against it. Noth- ing would stay in the system unless it worked against all of the martial arts.
“Theseniorsarethenext big group,” he continues. “Those are probably the two most vulnerable segments
of our society — the young kids and the kūpuna — so it makes us feel good to give back to them and try to help them out.”
