Located on Hekaha Street in ‘Aiea, BOXFIT808 Box- ing Gym is a site for people to learn their fighting skills in an enjoyable yet chal- lenging atmosphere. Class- es are open to both youth and adults, whether they are female or male. Everyone from newbies to advanced pugilists are welcome to practice there.
“All four boxers that we took won or placed in the top three. Now, they are all nationally ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in their divisions,” Ramirez says.
It’s also where four na- tionally ranked boxers train, who placed in the top three positions at USA Boxing Nationals held from March 25 to April 3 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Originally the champion- ships were supposed to be scheduled last December, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, they had to be re- scheduled to this year. There were more than 1,000 box- ers registered for this tour- nament.
Ramirez has been train- ing athletes for more than 20 years. Besides mentoring boxers, the coach has had a longtime love for teach- ing fitness conditioning to gymnasts and soccer players as well. He is an alumnus of University of California Santa Barbara with a bach- elor’s degree in sociology. After moving to Hawaiʻi in 1993, he earned a teaching certification from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
These winning boxers in- clude Jordan Panthen from Kapolei, the 165-pound na- tional champion in the elite
Panthen had more than 30 people in his bracket and Galiza had more than 60.
