‘Ilima Intermediate School Is Now Blue Zones Certified

Spearheaded by the ʻEwa Beach school’s elective department, specif- ically health teacher Janna- lyn Igarashi, the accredita- tion took place over the past year. Though, according to Igarashi, it was an easy feat, given the fact that ʻIlima has
been practicing most of Blue Zones’ criteria for a couple of years.

The mission began in 2019 when ʻIlima’s staff and fac- ulty took part in a day full of morale-boosting activities. This included a relay race, meditation, Zumba, yoga, art therapy and facial masks.
Once Igarashi learned about Blue Zones, she real- ized that much of the work to get certification was high- lighting efforts that were al- ready in-place. Meanwhile, the decision to allow elective teachers to lead this effort was the right one, to hear Igarashi tell it.
“We’re all teaching kids, and in order to be healthy, we want to make sure that we’re staying healthy as well. We want to practice what we preach,” shares Igarashi. “After that whole day, we did a teacher survey and the amount of positivity that we got back from the staff said that it was such a fun day, and that we should do it once a quarter.
