Gallery Remains Go-to Spot For Art Lovers

On a recent visit, I saw what they meant by that. Not only was there new artwork, as one would expect from this popu- lar gallery, there were also new enterprises in every nook and cranny of their 8,400-square- foot space.
Says Janis Lee, showroom manager, “We represent more than 250 artists in a variety of media. We source 85% of our inventory from local artists and complement their work with some vintage and contempo- rary pieces from around the world.”
Much of fishcake has un- dergone an amazing trans- formation. You can find Ant- arctic- and science-inspired knitted sculptures in Michelle Schwengel-Regala’s studio; get a sweet tattoo at Gentle Scratches tattoo parlor; pick up some stylish essentials at Is- land Boy; and much more. The gallery continues to morph into the go-to place for art- ists and art lovers looking for unique items or experiences.
“Akemi Rogers and I co-founded fishcake in late 2007 at our present 307 Kama- ni Street location with furnish- ings and art for designers and homeowners who were look- ing for that special piece,” says chief creative Maura Fujihira. “It has evolved into a commu- nity hive of varied designs and art-related endeavors under one roof.”

as an incubator for culinary art- ists on a rotating basis. I could not resist treating myself to fresh sourdough bread from Jeddie’s Breadies, a favorite pop-up. I had known Jeddie Kawahatsu as an artist, but was surprised to see she had morphed into a very talented baker, too.
Beyond the café is the art gallery, which currently fea- tures Just For Now, an exhibit of both two- and three-di- mensional art pieces curated by Keiko Hatano. On display through April 1, are recent works by Yumiko Glover, Jun Funahashi, Chiho Ushio, May Izumi, Maile Yawata, Keiko
Hatano and Ayaka Takao. Their work reflects their cre- ative resilience.
