Comprehensive Environmental Response Liability and Compensation Act (CERCLA) Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Site Inspection (SI) at the Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) Waiawa Gulch Unit Training and Equipment Site (UTES), Pearl City, Hawaii
The Army National Guard (ARNG) announces an Open House and Public Information meeting to explain and discuss the results of the CERCLA PFAS SI, which was conducted at the HIARNG UTES in the Pearl City Industrial Park. PFAS are manmade chemicals used in many industries to make things waterproof, non-stick, and stain resistant. The primary potential sources of Army PFAS releases are firefighting training areas where Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) was used to train firefighters to respond to petroleum fires. These chemicals are often described as “forever chemicals” because they do not breakdown over time and can build up in the environment and our bodies.

SI results detected PFAS compounds below respective Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) screening level (SLs) in soil, but above OSD SLs in groundwater. The ARNG will expand testing for PFAS in downgradient domestic drinking water wells.
