What is your favorite streaming service?
hen I meet MidWeek readers in public, I’m hum- bled and flattered when they treat me as a bona fide “celebrity.” They want to take a selfie with
me or get my autograph, and it’s somewhat embarrassing as I’ve never seen myself that way.
Occasionally, I’ll get blindsided when a pretty young woman will light up and say, “Aren’t you the guy who writes in MidWeek?” That’s when I’ll suck in my gut, throw my shoulders back and say, “Why yes, I’m Ron Nagasawa.” Then she smiles and says, “My grandmother loves your column.” Ouch!
LAUREN HORITA
Student, Kaimukī
“Netflix because it has a diverse range of shows, allowing me to watch my favorites genres of mystery, rom-com and drama.”
CURTIS WILMINGTON III
Student, Honolulu
“HBO Max. It has all of
DC, Game of Thrones and one of my all-time favorites — The Lord of the Rings trilogy.”
KRISTEN KURATA
Accountant, Honolulu
“Netflix because there’s just so much variety — the newest reality shows, documentaries and chick- flick movies.”
PHILIP LEMOINE
Content Creator, Honolulu
“YouTube. I’m a YouTuber myself, and I love watching other creators making entertaining content. It just feels more real, unlike traditional media.”
However, I’m often surprised by how many young people actually read my column and recognize me. I went to a car wash and the person helping me couldn’t have been much older than 18. He raved about my column and cited a recent one, so I knew he actually read it. Thanks, Braden!
In my newspaper career, I’ve met many famous people: local, national and global celebrities. The local ones are al- ways the nicest, as it must be the aloha spirit. The only Amer- ican president that I saw somewhat up close wasn’t Barack Obama, it was John F. Kennedy in 1963. My dad was a huge supporter of his, so our family went to Waikīkī to view his motorcade on Kalākaua Avenue. We were right in front of the old International Market Place. My dad hoisted me onto his shoulders so I could see. I distinctly remember waving to the president, who pointed at me, smiled and waved back.

WDim The Lights
hen a room is brightly lit, people tend to talk more about their outer lives and all the things they are doing. When a room is lit by
candlelight, the conversations become slower-paced with more thoughtful pauses and personal sharing.
I tend to gravitate more toward dim lighting when I am alone, as it elicits within me a sense of creative calm. It seems as though when the external lights are lowered, my inner world comes alive, and I get bet- ter ideas and seem to come up with more meaningful insights.
When the lights are on, my outer world gets acti- vated and I start thinking about all the things I have to do. Therefore, one of the intentions I’ve decided to set for this year is to spend more time in dim lighting. Will you join me?

When my dad was stationed in Okinawa, our school was visited by Fess Parker, the actor who played Daniel Boone in the series of the same name.
Recently, my daughter watched the streaming series Wednesday that’s based on the character from the original The Addams Family TV program. I loved that show, and when our family lived in San Jose, California, I met the orig- inal actor (Ted Cassidy), who played Lurch, when he was making an appearance at a local super market.
My mom knew that I loved the show so we stood in a long line so I could shake hands with Cassidy. It’s one of my fondest memories of Mom, as she could barely speak English but granted me one of my greatest childhood wishes. I did the same thing for my son when my wife and I took him to see the Power Rangers at Aloha Stadium.
I once met Tom Selleck when Magnum, P.I. was in its heyday. It was at the Waikīkī Theater No. 3 in the men’s restroom. His huge bodyguard came in and scoped out the bathroom. I was already doing my business when I looked to my right and saw Selleck next to me at the urinal. But that’s a story for a different publication.
