Then, about a week ago, Sharon Higa, part of Ha- waiian Electric’s communi- cations team, told me about an interesting project one of its employees was working on: boot brush stations at six O‘ahu trailheads. Kismet!
At first, we thought it was an exercise machine with its bench and handle bars, but the posted sign instead asked us to please brush off our shoes with the attached brush and spray their bottoms with the solution provided before starting our trek. So, we did. Shoes clean (well, not su- per clean, but disinfected at least), we finished reading the sign, which said the protocol
I had to learn more, and she put me in touch with the man who spearheaded the project: Sean Moura, Hawai- ian Electric’s wildlife biolo- gist and senior environmen- tal scientist. He’s also the company’s protected species program manager, and in that role, wanted to address the detections of rapid ʻōhiʻa
