6 MIDWEEK OCTOBER 19, 2022
Books 4 Keiki was founded in 2020 as a nonprofit organi- zation. Our mission is to pro- mote early literacy development and create excitement around lifelong learning through access to books. In order to achieve this mission, our program provides free books to chil- dren enrolled in state Department of Education-partnered prekindergarten classes across Hawai‘i.

children were proud of their books. They would bring the books back to school in their backpacks, read them during Choice Time and put them back in their backpacks to take back home. Sometimes I would see the same book for a week or two, always tucked away safely in their backpacks at the end of the day. The books Books 4 Keiki has provided the students with are truly their trea- sures!”
Book Program Instills Love Of Reading In Keiki
By Michael Terry, founder of Books 4 Keiki
The securing of funding through corporate sponsorships, literacy campaigns and individual dona- tions allowed program growth for the 2022-23 school year to a total of eight public elementary schools — ‘Aiea, Fern, Kalihi Uka, Kalihi Waena, Pālolo, Linapuni, Kailua and ‘Ele‘ele — with a sum of 150 pre- kindergarten students. Each student
Preschool teacher Akiko Miyata shared the following: “Getting our monthly book delivery from Books 4 Keiki is like having Christmas ev- ery month. After revealing the book to the class, we read it all together. Before sending it home, I like to build the children’s confidence with the story so they can share it and ‘read’ it to and with their families. A student would come to school and tell me, ‘I read my book with my mom. She read to me because I like the book.’ The books not only provide literacy opportunities for the children, but they also have been supporting our families to spend time together in a meaningful way.
