was fortunate enough to create This week, I’m sharing how to card that can be propped up
some cards. Cardmaking is a fun way to get creative with colors, prints, techniques and embellishments. It’s like a mini art canvas that you can share with someone.
create a classic side-step card. I figured out the measure- ments to make it a little larger than the standard card so that there’s room for embellish- ments. Plus, with the larger side panel, you can construct a small pocket for the inside that could hold a gift card.
and displayed for all to enjoy. Sometimes I put a small photo on the side panel. This is great card to make for all kinds of celebrations, from holidays to birthdays and more.
And that’s with just a plain folded piece of cardstock. There are also 3D cards where you can have things pop up, twist and spin or even pop out. I give a lot of props to those who invent these fun interac- tive cards. I call them paper engineers.
I like side-step cards be- cause they look like you spent a lot more time on them than you really did. For me, the hardest part is deciding on how I am going to decorate it.
Why not give it a try? I, for one, believe every day can be World Cardmaking Day and what better time to start than the fun month I call Craft- ober?
SUPPLIES AND TOOLS:
• 7-by-10-inch cardstock, for card base
• scoring board (No. 30195075) • paper trimmer
(No. 30174692)
• embellishments (stamped
images, stickers, cardstock for
layering, buttons, etc.) • double-stick tape
(No. 30013284)
• Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky
Glue (No. 30172710)
• scissors
• 5-by-7-inch card envelope
Note: If using printed cardstock, keep in mind the direction of the print and how it will appear on the final card design.
This 5-by-7-inch card size gives you room to add a small pocket behind the left 3-inch section — perfect for a gift card.

Place the cardstock onto the
2 Place the cardstock onto the scoring board with the 10-inch
edge along the top and the 4-inch section topside.
The first and last lines to score match where the slit starts and ends. Align the cardstock to match and score at the following inch marks:
1 1/4, 2 1/2, 4, 5 1/2 and 7 3/4.
3
Now score the 3-inch section
paper trimmer with the 7-inch edge along the top. Line up the left edge at the 3-inch mark. Place the trimmer blade at the 11/4-inch mark on the cutting guide, cut to the 7 3/4- inch mark, creating a slit.
at the 5-inch mark. Score only from the edge to the slit.
6
4 Start folding the card. On
the left 3-inch side of the card base, fold down at the 5-inch scored line.
7 After the last
fold, you will end up with the card base having a three-tiered folded section on the right.
5 On the right side or 4-inch section,
fold the scored lines like an accordion. Start with folding the first
1 1/4-inch section at the bottom scored line down. Then, fold the second line up.
8 Embellish the card as desired. Because of the
tired layers, you can add a lot of dimension to the card. The card is great for displaying. If you keep the embellishments below the height of the top left edge, you will be able to place the card in a standard envelope.
Continue the accordion folding with the rest of the scored lines.
