Tucked away in a residential Kapolei neighborhood is KN Design Studio, an art gallery that serves as a hub for artists and art lovers alike. Kathy Norton (aka KN) opened the rustic, earthy and ocean-lov- ing space to provide herself, her ‘ohana and other artists with a platform to sell their work.

Creating A Gallery For Her Fellow Artists
“I’ m an artist myself, so I know how much love and pas- sion goes into your art,” says Norton, whose go-to avenues are acrylic painting, resin art and furniture building. “Be- cause I’ m fortunate enough to have this space, I want to help other artists get their art out there to share it with ev- eryone else.”

“My favorite thing is cre- ating a space for a client who never thought they could come home to something so special,” says the Makakilo resident. “One of my clients said when they come home every day, they feel like they’ re on vacation. I’ m so happy that they’re happy.”
Everything in the gallery is handmade and Hawai‘i-in- spired, says Norton, who adds that she also seeks artists who are committed to sustainabil- ity.
KN Design Studio is the perfect fusion of Norton’s passions: interior design and artistry. She’s able to make art, then sell it to people who will adorn their homes with one- of-a-kind pieces.
There will also be live demonstrations, musical per- formances and a presentation by Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i.
“I’ m a passionate person when it comes to sustainabil- ity and never throw anything away when it comes to arts and crafts,” she says. “I’m al- ways creating something from nothing.
Not unlike Norton, the artists found at KN Design Studio often have full-time jobs outside of art. There’s a special education teacher who does underwater photography, a state Department of Educa- tion employee who creates resin art, a full-time mom who makes jewelry, a student who paints canvases and a massage therapist who makes pottery, among many others.
When asked what her fa- vorite part of being an artist is, Norton shares, “If I never sold a piece of my artwork, I’d still be happy. I’m hap- py in my workspace and my work shed creating art for just my home and my family.
“Artists are afraid to price their own pieces,” she adds. “They can’t put a value on it, so I’m helping them and that makes me feel good. I’ m an artist, too, so I get teary eyed talking about it.”
“It’s something that’s in- side me; I come from a cre- ative family. One of my fa- vorite things to do is to create something from nothing and watch how magical it can be. If I can sell it and make somebody else happy, that’s amazing.”
Known to wear many hats, Norton is a fitness profession- al-turned-interior designer. When a former client visit- ed her home gym, he knew he needed her artistic eye to decorate his house. Fast-for- ward 20 years and Norton, who’s a one-woman-show, does everything from design-

This weekend (Oct. 8-9), KN Design Studio, located at 1051 Kakala St. No. 204, will host a two-day Kapolei Ar- tisan Popup Market, during which attendees can check out locally made artwork — rang- ing from metal petroglyphs and pop art to tapestry and greeting cards — and meet the artists who made them.
