“His magnetic and outgoing personality makes even first timers feel comfortable and at ease. That’s what draws peo- ple to his classes and work,” she says.
They are plein air painters, as simple as that. Artists out painting on location.
Brown’s cohort is not the only plein air group in Ho- nolulu. At various sites on different days and times, you can find other similarly enthu- siastic painters. Should you happen upon such a group, do stop in and admire their work.
You have probably seen them at some time in your life and wondered who they were and why they were there.
In reflecting on his jour- ney, he says, “My plein air studies were the farm-to-ta- ble restaurant equivalent of easel-to-gallery as I found an audience that appreciated gesture, colors and the spon- taneity among collectors and gallery representation.”

At any session, the ages of his painters can range from 9 to 90. Beyond the art skills he imparts, Brown shares his knowledge of the busi- ness side of art. He is their mentor, encouraging them to enter their work at venues such as Punahou Carnival and Hale‘iwa Arts Festival.
For almost 30 years, Mark Brown has been the Pied Piper of plein air painters on O‘ahu, leading his band of about 20 artists in these sessions filled with demonstrations, skills instruction, mentoring and camaraderie.
“The late Barbara Sumida used gemlike complimentary colors with soft edges,” he notes. “Frances Wong com- bines both brush and palette knife strokes for an earthy or- ganic look. Dennis Daniels fa- vors the use of warm layers of color and a strong focal point.
Bob Dusendschon’s strength is an archival focus and an illustrator’s skilled hand. Wayne Christianson favors a strong red underpainting and experimentation. Yvonne Ma- nipon’s forte creates great eye candy with gesture and col- ors. Spencer Chang is known
