Dakota Johnson took on the role of Anne Elliot in the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, which debuted on Netflflix July 15. The movie industry might seem like second nature for Johnson — and that’s because it is. She’s the daughter of Golden Globe Award-winning actor Don Johnson and this actress, who played Detective Danny “Danno” Williams’ mother in Hawai‘i 5-0.
Woody Harrelson is in talks to star in Sailing, a musical comedy that follows the trials of a group of 1970s musicians discovering the sounds and lifestyle of yacht rock. Harrelson was recently in Venom: Let There Be Carnage as Cletus Kasady. His upcoming work includes The Man From Toronto, in which he plays opposite of this well-known actor/comedian who’s starred in Central Intelligence and the Jumanji film franchise.
Disney is on a roll with live-action remakes. Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks as papa Gepetto, will be released on Disney+ next month. Also getting an update with real actors is Lilo & Stitch, the animated classic about a girl from Hawai‘i and her feisty blue alien. While it’s too early to know who will be starring in the remake, it is likely to feature some local talent.
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright is in talks to write the script. Also reportedly on board is this filmmaker, best known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
Eight years ago this week, the Marvel Cinematic Universe flick Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters. It starred Chris Pratt as adventurer Peter Quill, who became the subject of an unceasing bounty hunt. In order to escape the villain, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of misfits — gun-toting raccoon Rocket, tree-like humanoid Groot, deadly Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. Groot — voiced by Vin Diesel — can only reply with one phrase, which actually carries an endless array of meanings and emotions. What are those three weighty words?

National Mutt Day
This day raises awareness of the multitude of mixed-breed dogs waiting for adoption in shelters and rescues — so make sure you’re one of those “who let the dogs out.” It honors how these often-overlooked canines enrich our lives with their companionship and love. In fact, they’re so important that they are celebrated two times a year, both on July 31 and Dec. 2.
