4 MIDWEEK JULY 6, 2022
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
      P Wake-up Call
retty sure I mentioned to you that I’ve returned to my daily Bootcamp workouts. This requires quite a bit of discipline, as I have to wake up at
3:45 a.m. in order to attend my 4:45 class. In order to get enough sleep, I must hit the sack at 9 or 9:30 p.m. at the latest, just like elementary school.
So, I set my iPhone alarm and go to bed. One thing that I’ve found by going to sleep early is that I have vivid dreams that I remember when I wake up. So, the other day, just like the other four days of the week, I went to sleep.
TIFFANY THURSTON
Musician, Honolulu
“Cookies and cream because it reminds me of my childhood, and who doesn’t like finding big chunks of Oreos in creamy vanilla ice cream? Dave’s Ice Cream in Waimānalo always had the best kine!”
KAWIKA MACHIDA
Community Development Coordinator, Honolulu “Funky Monkey from Uncle’s Ice Cream Sandwiches. It’s like eating banana bread-flavored ice cream and I’m all for it.”
AMANDA YEE
YouTuber, Honolulu
“Mint chocolate chip because it’s minty, refreshing, not too sweet and you get bursts of chocolaty richness when you bite into a chocolate chip.”
DAVID LUKELA
General Manager, Honolulu
“The Snuggy Bear from Slice by HB Baking. It’s
all my favorite things — coffee almond fudge and English toffee ice creams, salted milk crumble and Oreo crust — all in one flavor.”
Seems like I literally just fell asleep when my phone alarm went off. I jumped out of bed careful not to disturb my wife and dogs Buddy and Wilson. (Yes, they sleep in the bed with us.)
I used the bathroom and grabbed a quick wake-up shower. I proceeded with my morning get-ready rituals. I brushed my teeth and gargled with mouthwash. I then shaved and applied my Grey Flannel after-shave. I’ve been using that since high school and it’s my signature scent.

          WMy Personal Precepts
hen going through a personal transforma- tion year ago, I asked myself how I wanted to show up in life. From this, some person-
al precepts emerged that I’ve added to from time to time. I’d like to share my current list with you. What are yours? Here are mine.
Be conscious. Be gracious. Be kind. Make mis- takes. Make amends. Go forward. Have apprecia- tion. Learn. Be grateful. Be silly. Be authentic. Be free. Let go. Get present. Trust yourself. Trust life. Make yourself happy. Embrace love. Embrace life. Belly laugh. Make love. Make waves. Know your value. Evolve. Grow. Be present. Live today. Make your way in the world of you.

I applied a bit of gel to my hair and combed what pre- cious little I have left. My next order of business is to go into the kitchen and take my medications and supple- ments. Actually, I first put eye drops in my eyes to help wake me up. I then mix about 6 ounces of water with creatine powder.
It’s for your muscles, but I don’t really know if it works — it was just something I read about in a magazine. Next comes all my pills and capsules. At last count they totaled 23. If I could take an IV for all those I would, but this is what it takes to keep me reasonably healthy.
I then change into my workout clothes and put on my athletic shoes. I feel that if I can’t be in great shape, at least I can dress the part. I grab a workout towel and get another drink of water. First rule of exercise is to hydrate, right?
Of course, that means I have to hit the bathroom one more time before I leave. I grab my car keys and go back into the bedroom to kiss my wife goodbye. When I did, she looked up and asked what time it was.
I checked my iPhone and saw that it was only 1 a.m.! I must have dreamed that my alarm went off. She groggily laughed and said, “Oh Ron! Go back to bed.” I didn’t want to waste a perfectly good make-ready so I climbed back into bed with all my clothes on.
The last time I did that was 25 years ago while waiting for my wife to go into labor with our daughter.
