Victorino is a Maui native who was originally going to attend the University of Hawai‘i
at Mānoa on an athletic scholar-
ship. But after his senior year at St.
Anthony School, he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round of the 1999 MLB draft and decided to pursue a professional baseball career from there.
 His decorated winning career
would be recognized when his name
appeared on the exclusive list of
players on the 2021 BBWAA Hall of
Fame Ballot. Victorino responded to
the news recently by saying, “I guess it was probably one of the largest ‘pinch me’ moments of my life. People would say, and understandably so, I was lucky to do a lot of great things in the game of baseball. But to see your name on a ballot with what you consider some of the greatest to ever play the game, it’s definitely humbling.”

In retirement, he and his wife, Melis- sa, are giving back through the Shane Victorino Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting op- portunities for underserved youth. The foundation engages in projects that provide children in need with educational,
recreational and wellness programs.
This week, Shane shares an easy-to-make favorite,
grilled kalbi ribs.
