MARCH 30, 2022 MIDWEEK 7
All Fired Up Over Recruits’ Timely Service
Dear Darah,
I wanted to share this with you and give special recognition to a community service event that was done in Hilo. Twen- ty-five Hawai‘i Island dentists received free PPEs for their offices, coordinated through Hawai‘i Dental Association. We could not have completed this task without the commu- nity service of the Hawai‘i County Fire Recruit Class No. 50. Kim Nguyen asked for volunteers of which only four signed up — some with spouses, as others sent office staff because they were either working or away. Both Dr. Joan Greco and I concluded
that we needed to reserve and preserve our dentists’ backs and hands to handle the job they’re doing daily for 10-12 hours. It was time to call in the calvary!
vehicles, broke down tents and cleaned up. The fire recruits were organized and made the distribution task seamless. As the afternoon approached, the Hilo rain was also on time. Recruit Bergner took it upon himself to purchase several rolls of plastic to protect the PPEs. He declined to give us the receipt or an amount. He certainly deserves recognition for a heart of dedication he has for the fire department he so proudly represents.
No. 50 and chiefs Patrick Springer and Kazuo Todd for their selfless acts and for putting the service of others first. Our state is so blessed to have firefighters who have a passion for helping others.

Fire Recruit Chief Patrick Springer was approached and consented without hesita- tion. They orchestrated three groups of approximately eight recruits who showed up promptly. Filled to the brim, the first group emptied a huge Matson container and orga- nized each distribution into pods for pickup. They set up tents, tables and chairs. The second group arrived to lead each pod into the vehicles. The third group finished loading

What an amazing and successful event! Kudos to the Hawai‘i County Fire Department Recruit Class
The recruits were relent- less, focused and persevered to complete the task with uniformed precision, and carried themselves with re- spect, dignity and honor. We were extremely impressed to be in the presence of these
civil servants.
Special thanks to fire re-
cruit chief Springer and fire chief Kazuo Todd for making this possible for us. To Mayor Mitch Roth and the Hawai‘i County community, rest as- sured, these recruits are the added assets to their fellow firefighters who are protect-
