The Vietnam War ended with the fall of Saigon and evacuation of per- sonnel in 1975. It ended with no fanfare or recognition of troops returning home from this divisive war. This per- ception changed in recent years with Vietnam veterans now receiving the recognition they richly deserve.

Saluting Our Veterans

Former president Donald Trump signed a Proclamation into law in 2017 honoring all Vietnam veterans for their service and sacrifice, by pro- claiming March 29 of every year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
1978, with a group of vet- erans going to Washington, D.C., to gain support for the creation of an advocacy orga- nization devoted exclusively to the needs of Vietnam veter- ans. Today, VVA has a nation- al membership of more than 85,000 veterans, with more than 650 chapters.
To honor Vietnam veter- ans this year, Vietnam Veter- ans of America (VVA), Oahu Chapter, in partnership with COMPACFLT, will be host- ing a ceremony at 10 a.m. March 29 at Punchbowl. Various military leadership and local dignitaries will be in attendance. All Vietnam
O‘ahu Chapter 858 of the VVA was chartered in Au- gust 2000. Its mission is to promote and support a full range of issues important to Vietnam veterans, including obtaining entitled benefits (both in compensation and quality health care).
As Vietnam veterans’ pop- ulation age and poor health increases, we are committed to informing as many of the 20,000 Vietnam veterans in the state that this organization exists to provide assistance and camaraderie to them.
VVA O‘ahu Chapter meets monthly at the O‘ahu Veter- ans’ Center in Foster Village. We are on hand to help any veteran. We keep veterans current on relevant subjects and invite speakers to discuss pertinent topics.
