What’s the best mochi?
y 24-year-old daughter is constantly spotting guys that she swears are my look-alike or dop- pelgänger. She will text me a photo of some
random man saying, “Dad, this guy looks just like you!” Of course, he looks nothing like me and I will say so unless he is incredibly handsome. Those times are rare — actually nonexistent, him being handsome, that
is. Still, over the years, I have been mis- taken for or compared to other people. It really depends on what photo of me is running with my column at the time.

“Sweet Little Mochi is my favorite. The business has so many non-traditional flavors and the mochi is always super soft.”
LAUREN ARAKI
Business Owner, Honolulu
“Crunchy peanut butter mochi from Kūhiō Grille because it’s salty, sweet and crunchy all together.”
KALEO WELLS
Student, Kaimukī
“Classic butter mochi from Kanemitsu Bakery on Moloka‘i. For someone that doesn’t really eat mochi, I actually enjoyed that one.”
ALTON CHOY
Physical Therapist, Kāne‘ohe
“I really like Two Ladies Kitchen in Hilo. It’s a treat because we don’t get to enjoy it unless someone visits there.”
Years ago, Honolulu Star-Advertiser three dot columnist Ben Wood always mistook me for local celebrity chef DK Kodama. I was flattered, of course, but there was no way I was as good-look- ing or talented as DK!

Shared Pain P Is Less Painful
eople come to me for guidance when they need support with stressful life challenges. Yet, what ultimately seems to be most helpful is not my
advice as much as it is hearing that my other clients are also going through the same situation, complexity or frustration.
They are comforted to know they are “not alone,” even though these people are strangers to them. Why is this? It is because as human beings, we need to feel a part of something. We need to belong — so much so that every part of our lives is organized around connection and sharing. Yet, it’s when we are deeply challenged that we tend not to share, and it’s in this that we feel very alone in our pain.

It’s not a bad thing, as Bautista is fa- mous and muscular with that bad-boy look. When I told my daughter about the comparison, she laughed a little too hard and said, “Dad, get real!”

When our daughter got home she told me the story and then showed me who her kids thought I resembled. It was a photo of the cartoon character, Carl Fredricksen from the movie Up. Laughing, my wife said, “Those kids are spot on!”
