What ice cream flavor represents you?
Pet Names
I’ m pretty sure we all agree that our pets are part of the family. And I’m positive that my family would argue that sometimes I place our dogs Buddy and Wilson in a higher category of priority than them. It’s not really a problem, since they love our “boys” as much as I do.
We spare no expense with our dogs and that’s good because if I started to compare what we spend on them versus what we spend on ourselves, there’s no com- parison. The best example is what I spend to have our dogs groomed versus what my wife spends to have her hair done.
SARA WATANABE
Part-Time Teacher, ‘Aiea
“Chocolate moose tracks. Smooth in some areas and bumpy in others, but always sweet.”
ZACH MIYASHIRO
City Bus Operator, Hālawa
“Kūlolo because in the Hawaiian culture, the kalo represents family. I’m very family oriented by making sure they’re always first.”
SHEENA KEOLA
Technology Coordinator, ‘Aiea
“Mint chocolate chip because its cool tingle is something that mirrors
my ambitious ideas. The chocolate chips justify my fancy for sparkly things and ‘we can and we will’ spirit.”
JUSTIN APPLEGATE
Curbside Order Specialist, Pearl City
“Cookies and cream. I try to be pure, but there are some darker and delicious traits to me.”
Let’s put it this way, I have to hide the receipts from the dog groomers lest my wife sees them and knows that this is indicative of me placing dog fur above her beau- tiful locks of hair. I even sometimes split the groomer’s bill over a couple of credit cards on the chance that my wife scrutinizes the statements.
Before you know it, I’ll be paying them cash under the table or money laundering through Venmo! And don’t get me started on dog supplies and veterinarian bills.

PWho Is To Blame?
eople often blame external circumstances for why they can’t achieve something. They’ll say, “I don’t have the time, support or re-
sources I need to be, do or have what I want.”
In my work, I’ve found that it’s not an external lack that’s holds anyone back as much as it is a mis- directed internal focus that keeps one stuck. This is because our power to achieve anything comes from
within, not from blaming the lack without.
The magic of manifestation happens when we intentionally shift our psychic and cognitive focus
toward how to make something happen.
Once we do this, progress begins and obstacles previously perceived as “in the way” become simply
“on the way.”

Since we have both dogs on special diets, I buy their food directly from their veterinarian doctor’s office. They are the nicest people on the planet as most animal folks are, so I don’t even ask the cost of what I buy. But for what I probably spend every month, I could probably feed them wagyu rib-eye steaks and still have money left over to hire Gordon Ramsey to cook it.
As some of you know, I recently had major surgery. Well, some of those bills started to come in and I com- mingle those with invoices from Buddy and Wilson’s annual veterinarian visits. Of course, all bills were paid on time but if I had to choose, Buddy and Wilson would be in good standing with collection agencies.
One thing that my kids noticed while my son was home for the holidays was that I started to lovingly refer to our dogs with the same names that I called our children when they were toddlers.
I was calling out to Buddy one evening yelling, “Come here, my favorite boy!” to which my son came running into the room. I did a similar thing with Wilson when playing with him on the couch. I kept teasing him, “Are you my baby?” And of course, my daughter would pop her head in the room and say, ”Dad, were you calling me?”
It wasn’t until I hugged both dogs and said, “Hello, loves of my life!” and my wife walked into the room that I figured I needed to dial it back a bit.
