4 MIDWEEK JANUARY 26, 2022
            New Virus Strain
What’s your favorite way to wind down after a long day?
Igot it. In fact, I’ve had it for a number of years. It wasn’t until recently that I was able to identify exactly what I had and now I believe I might be patient zero. And I am pretty sure my entire family has it, too. I’ve even noticed that some of my neighbors have it.
Folks, I have a bad case of “garajahritis!” I was self-di- agnosed while watching a television commercial and see- ing one of my local celebrity heroes, Champ, explain what it was. He’s the Waipahu version of Dr. Anthony Fauci and explains, “It’s when you store everything in your garage except your cars.”
KANAKO LORENZO
Designer/Seamstress, ‘Aiea
“Drinking a nice cup of non-caffeine tea. It’s a simple ritual that helps me sleep restfully.”
DEON TOGAMI
Barman, Makiki
“Since I work late, I literally go home, wash up and sleep. Then, I wake up to go to the gym to unwind.”
MARY GRACE DOWD
Health Educator RN, ‘Aiea
“After a long day at work and taking care of the kids, I like to listen to podcasts or watch cat TikToks.”
JOHN VENTURA
Physical Therapist Assistant, Honolulu
“Taking a long, hot shower.”
Recently (nearly a month after Christmas), I finally de- cided it was time to take down our decorations. I have spe- cific Rubbermaid storage containers that I pack everything into and stack in my garage. It seems like every year our decorations outpace the number of containers, so I try to stuff them back into the boxes they came in.
I add these to the containers and boxes containing our decorations for Easter, Halloween (starting to rival Christ- mas decorations) and Thanksgiving. Needless to say, this has offset the storage of at least one vehicle in our two-car garage.

         I The Blur Of Time
’ve noticed that my recent memories are blurry, and it’s been hard to recall exactly when I experienced a certain event, or even who it was with. If you
relate and want to know why, it’s simply because there have been fewer distinctive events. Many of our daily experiences have overlapped because we spent more time in the same space, on the same computer screen, with the same people, doing the same activities.
We effortlessly remember details when they have emotional impact, and though it has been emotional, there have also been way fewer segments to our day and more monotony. That is why the past feels blurry.
The oddest part, though, is knowing that we are living in a momentous time, yet feeling as if nothing really significant happened.

And to be honest, the second car space has been taken up by other stuff we don’t have room for in our house. The clotheslines for hang-drying actually serves as my clothes closet. We also have all the old costumes our daughter used for hula and Tahitian dance, plus her cheerleading bag and equipment.
And while our son no longer lives with us, my wife can’t stand the thought of throwing out all the stuff belonging to her firstborn. We still have his white dresser lined with dinosaur paper from when he came home from the hospital as a baby! And for our other kids, namely our two dogs, we store all their stuff in the garage as well.
I used to rent storage space for all that but decided the money could go to “better” uses like our drive-thru coffee expense and food door-delivery. My New Year’s resolution has me rethinking that and it would be nice to park our cars in the garage again, albeit it will probably be my wife and daughter’s cars.
I’m OK with that. Besides, my car is 15 years old and has 160,000 miles on it. And I don’t worry about getting my hair wet when I walk to my car in the rain.
Then again, I should just stop watching so much TV and these commercials. Either that, or maybe I can ask Champ to do a new commercial for my girls about “shoe- hoardingitis!”
