Community Is Driven To Lend A Hand
Every day, we live among good Samaritans who ask for nothing
in return, including recognition. In Hawai‘i, we are brought up with the mindset to mālama one another.
Dear Darah,
I’m writing to you as I wait (going on four hours) for a tow truck. My front wheel fell off my silver Tacoma between 9th and 10th on Kaimukī Avenue today. I was so surprised and touched by the number of people (probably close to 30) who stopped to see if I was OK and/or needed assistance. Several mechanics told me I waslucky—ifIwasonthe freeway it would’ve been re- ally bad. A sweet lady even brought drinks and a bowl of water for my dogs who were in the car. I didn’t get anyone’s names, but just
wanted to try to let them all know how much I appreciat- ed all the kindness, concern and offers of help. Thank you very much!

Dear Darah,
On Wednesday, Sept. 8, after 4 p.m., my grandson had truck trouble and pulled over on the H3 (Hālawa side) about a mile away from the quarry, Kāne‘ohe bound. My daughter came behind her son’s Tacoma with her Cam- ry to give us a ride home. O’Sung car carrier driver Titi came later to assist with the tow. He was so professional
nearly half an hour. So grate- ful for his help; above and be- yond! We did call HPD but were gone before they came. Mahalo from three genera- tions!

Thank you for taking the time to write to me and recognize these peo- ple and businesses. Their care and compassion for others is inspirational and really defines “alo- ha.” Every day, we live among good Samaritans who ask for nothing in return, including recog- nition. In Hawai‘i, we are brought up with the mind-
set to mālama one another. The concerned people in Kaimukī, the brave driver of that white Sienna van, the hardworking staff of O’ Sung and the efficient AAA ‘ohana exemplify the meaning of mālama: to take care of, protect, to serve.

Big thanks to AAA for the text updates and keeping us posted during this heavy peak traffic time. Although we were pulled over on the side of the road, the cars are traveling at such a high speed that it can become very dan- gerous for someone parked in the shoulder lane.
He stayed with us until the car was on the tow carrier and we all left safely, which was
Dear Vicki and Sydney,
and we were so impressed by his service!
Before we knew it, a gen- tleman driving a white Sienna van had pulled up behind my daughter’s car partly off the right lane with his flashers on. The driver used his hands and then a cloth to flag upcoming cars to slow down and move to the left lane.
