8 MIDWEEK OCTOBER 6, 2021
     Book Pick Of The Week
Linda Andrade Wheeler’s book, The Sweet Life: Puunene, Maui. Where Sugar Was Life, which she co-authored with her son L.C. Wheeler, is a recounting of her experience living in the small plantation town. “Keeping the authenticity of the place, people and events was paramount in our minds, because while we were mindful of being memory makers, we were also aware that Pu‘unēnē people were memory keepers,” states Linda. “So the sacredness of the moments were important in preserving them — similar to the handling of a valuable cultural artifact. These were precious elements of writing that we had to create and maintain
to get the reality and integrity of the stories, throughout the book.” Find The Sweet Life on Amazon.
Rosemary and Larry Mild’s newest mystery book, Death Rules the Night, was released Sept. 7. This is the fourth installment of the local writing couple’s Dan and Rivka Sherman series. I haven’t read it yet, but the synopsis states
that there’s a clever bookstore cat named Lord Byron, and I’m all about novels with feline friends. Find Death Rules the Night and other books in the compilation on Amazon.
Inspire Church pastor Mike Kai’s book That Doesn’t Just Happen: How Excellence Accelerates Everything hit No. 1 on Amazon’s new seller list. In the book, he outlines what a culture of excellence looks like, diving into topics like how to select and train the right team, the five elements of organizational culture, how to “enterprise” like Tesla and so much more. Find That Doesn’t Just Happen everywhere books are sold and online.
Reader Adele recommended While Justice Sleeps by Stacey Abrams, a legal thriller. Technology has the amazing abil- ity to bring peo- ple together. From video chatting to social media and texting, it’s a won- derful web of connectiv- ity. In my case, it also has the ability to bring all of my worst qualities to the surface, specifically when I help my mom with her random questions — even more specifically with her tech-related questions.
say: “You’re going too fast; you need to show me how to do it.”
I’m always happy to help and never think of it as an inconvenience. With my mom, though, my reac- tion is ... well, let’s say it’s different.
When she calls me be- cause Hulu won’t load or there’s something wrong with her Gmail or Apple
TV, my other half will swoop in and take over when he hears my mom
Good Help Is Hard To Find
Because when the roles are reversed and we call our parents for help when we can’t get scratches out of the glass stove top or we overdraft our check- ing account or we set off the smoke detector and fanning it isn’t work- ing — these are real-life scenarios that my mom has helped me with over the years — don’t they always come through in the most supportive fash- ion with nothing but love and words of wisdom?
Bless my husband’s heart, he’s so patient, and walks my mom through each step with grace and kindness as I pout in the corner with my snarky attitude.
I’ m sure there are oth- ers out there who relate to my plight of struggling to keep their composure and sanity while helping their parents with tech-related issues.
Before you start think- ing that this is my normal disposition, let me assure you, it’s not. I think I’m great at explaining things and helping people with their queries. When read- ers phone in or send me an email, for example,
Well, I’m here to tell you that we’ re the ones who need to try our best to change our attitudes.
