HAWAI‘I’S FAVORITE MEDIA SURVEY By Kelli Shiroma Braiotta What was the last show you binge-watched?
        Sparking Joy
The difference between the men and the women in my house is so stark that it is almost too hard to comprehend. This December, my wife and I will have been married for 34 years, and today I still have no logical reasons for some of the things she does. On the flip side, there are things that I do that must drive her crazy. Might as well throw in our son and daughter, for they each have their own quirks.
Thanks to our son who lives in Minnesota, the room above our garage is a library. There are so many books, we are like an auxiliary of the state branch. Of course, our son has read them all. The titles, however, are of subjects none of us want to read about, so his books literally sit on the shelves collecting dust. I can’t afford to ship them to him until he wins Minnesota’s state lottery. I’m not holding my breath.

“I have recently binged watched She-Ra and the Princess of Power along with We’re Here in honor of pride. They are both so fun, heartwarming and celebratory.”
ALLAN GARCIA

“House of Cards. After watching the first episodes, I was hooked. The cinematography, along with the great characters, made me want to watch this series to the end.”
KACIE FUJIO

“Gossip Girl because the new reboot is coming in July.”

“Chef’s Table. Cooking has always been a passion of mine. Seeing the stories
of world-class chefs and how they got there is as inspiring to me as the food they create.”
You already know about our daughter’s vast shoe collec- tion. What you don’t know is that for every pair of shoes she owns, she has several matching outfits, sunglasses, jewelry, and coordinated makeup, nail polishes and perfumes. The good news is she’s bought most of that with money she’s earned. The bad news is that she lives with us, and while I love that, we have no place for all of her stuff.
  A MINDFUL MOMENT

I How To Self-care
’ve never heard the word “self-care” as much as I have this past year. It’s recommended by all the experts as something we need to do now
more than ever.
We all know we need to sleep well, eat well and
exercise, as well as have time to ourselves. Yet, to me, there is more.
Self-care from where I stand means to be mindful of your self-talk. It means to say nice things to your- self. Praise yourself. Stop setting unrealistic stan- dards for how to live. Appreciate who you are. Do for yourself what you would do for the one person you loved more than anything in the world.
This is how to practice self-care. It’s a necessity, not a luxury.

What gets me is that although she owns a single iPhone 12, she has a collection of phone cases. The phone cases are to her phone what her shoes are to her feet. I find discarded phone cases all over our house and it drives me nuts. In the grand scheme of things, I guess that’s petty of me, but unfortunately, that’s just how I’m built.
I have to be careful about what I reveal about my wife. All of our friends and her co-workers read this column re- ligiously, not so much to find out about me, but to get the “skinny” on her. I’ll start with our bed. First, please get your mind out of the gutter. Since I’m usually the last one out of bed and the last one to go to bed, I am the designated pillow caretaker. We have two pillows for sleeping purposes and another six purely for decoration. When I make the bed, I cannot haphazardly arrange the pillows, for they have a specific placement order.
It makes absolutely no sense to me as I will delicately arrange the pillows when I make the bed, only to remove them 16 hours later and put them back another eight hours later and so on. No one really enjoys how it looks unless somehow we get a surprise visit from Architectural Digest when we’re at work.
I guess I shouldn’t complain. Just ask my wife and daugh- ter about my tool collection in the garage.
