Family caregivers provide loving care for kūpuna at home, while continuing to work and juggle other family responsibilities. With Ha- wai‘i seniors comprising approximately 20 percent of the general population, and growing, family caregivers will increas- ingly be called in to help loved ones with personal and household care, financial oversight and transitions to higher levels of care.

The Caregiver Foundation has been serving Hawai‘i seniors, adults with dis- abilities and their caregivers for over 12 years. We like to think of ourselves as “your first step on your caregiving jour- ney.” Our services extend through all as- pects of life, including bill paying, care coordination and end-of-life care. The Caregiver Foundation also reaches out to the community through workshops, including the Alzheimer’s Foundation of
Ms. Bea is an example of one senior who benefits from our services. Ms. Bea was diagnosed with dementia, and since she has no family in Hawai‘i, she was re- ferred to The Caregiver Foundation for a consultation. Our goal was to coordinate the care that she needs while helping her to feel that she was still in charge and making decisions. Long story short, The Caregiver Foundation oversees Ms. Bea’s care coordination and legal services, and we’re now overseeing the renovation of her house so that she can continue to live at home.
2020, we retooled our annual fundraiser luncheon to become a virtual event, but with COVID-19 still in our communi- ty in 2021, we face another year with reduced expectations for fundraising, while the needs of our vulnerable popu- lations are great.
The work of The Caregiver Founda- tion is profoundly rewarding but chal- lenging, especially since we have been unable to meet with clients and sup- porters face-to-face for the past year. In
