Aloha surfers and beachgoers, September really delivered. As of this writing, we just finished a long-last- ing sizable south-southwest swell that peaked at 6 feet with reports of even 7-foot sets. This met the high surf advisory threshold, which basically means double overhead surf. We got that and more on select reefs, so I’m stoked.
Besides all that, there is some incredible competi- tion happening prior to the World Championship Tour that will kick off at Pipeline in late January.

Conditions were good, too, as winds were light for much longer than normal. When we lose our trades it’s not usually for more than a few days. O‘ahu got five days straight of light east to southeast winds. This pro- duced clean early mornings with sea breezes toward lunch, into the afternoon. However, there were times when the surf somehow cleaned up, creating “mys- to” moments, as reefs fired even after the sea breezes kicked in.
The CS is where fresh faces and World Tour veter- ans fight for a 2023 Cham- pionship Tour berth. The top 10 men and top five women will have their place in the top level World Champion- ship Tour. The lowest level
The prior CS competition was at the Vans U.S. Open at Huntington Beach, where both winners were from Ha- wai‘i — Ezekiel Lau and Bettylou Sakura Johnson. Hawai‘i also dominated last year in Ericeira, Portugal, so let’s hope this continues.

AccesSurf Hawai‘i To Host Wounded Warriors Day
It’s the new battleground called the Challenger Series. It happens through Decem- ber with nine events. This is the middle tier in pro surfing with 10,000 points up for grabs for the 96 men and 64 women in the field.
The fifth CS stop is in Portugal at the EDP Vissla Pro Ericeira now through Oct. 9. The point break ven- ue is 28 miles northwest of Lisbon.
