In bustling Pearl City be- tween H-1, the H-2 onramp, Kamehameha Highway and the new rail construction lies an oasis that is spurring green growth throughout O‘ahu: the Urban Garden Center.
After being closed to the public due to COVID-19, the center recently launched Second Saturday at the Gar- den to welcome back the public in a big way — with specialized workshops, a plant question booth, guided garden tours, and seed and fruit fly sales.
At the event, visitors will also be able to ask questions from the center’s master gardeners, expert volunteers who partook in a 15-week course and later interned for a minimum of 50 hours in the garden.
Created in 1989, the cen- ter has grown to house more than 18 theme gardens — in- cluding the popular rose gar- den — and an abundance of research plots.
“The second Saturday in July was fairly successful. Many people came to visit the center, and all spaces for the event were nearly full,” says Lau.
“Our master gardeners are passionate about learning horticulture techniques and also sharing their knowl- edge with the public,” Lau expounds. “Through their training course, they work side-by-side in the Urban Garden Center with Univer- sity of Hawai‘i gardeners to get hands-on experience.”
“Part of the mission is to promote applied research in horticulture and another part is to educate the general public about how to garden,” explains Tina Lau, junior ex- tension agent at the center, which is owned by the Uni- versity of Hawai‘i College
The upcoming Aug. 13 workshop, meanwhile, will demonstrate water-wise gar- dening and examine how to conserve water while en- hancing home landscapes. For a $15 entry fee, partici-
