Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
May ended with a booming high surf advisory swell. It’s pretty cool that the month of May started that way, too: pumping! Indeed, May delivered four separate episodes leading to about three weeks worth of really good surf — meaning, most the month we scored.
Brewer was born in Min- nesota in 1936. He then head- ed west to Long Beach when he was 3 years old. He started surfing in 1952 and started shaping around 1959.
You can feel it in the air, water and in your bones. Summer unofficially kicked off after Memorial Day week- end. But the true seasonal first day of summer is June 20 or 21—yes,itshiftsabit—just like most things in nature. But basically, it’s when the sum- mer solstice occurs: the sun is furthest north from the equa- tor and thus travels its longest path through the sky.
In 1960, he moved to the North Shore where his surf- ing rep grew at Waimea and Sunset. He opened a surf shop in Hale‘iwa and created his legend from there.
To kick off the summer of 2022, we have plenty of events.
On a sad note, the world said goodbye to the iconic surfboard shaper Dick Brew- er. He passed on to that big wave in the sky on May 30.

The Grom Contest by T&C Surf Designs was June 5-6 at Queen’s surf break at Kūhiō Beach. It was a don’t-miss for the entire family and beyond — especially after a long two- year pandemic pause.
Before that is the 2022 Ha- wai‘i Adaptive Surfing Cham- pionships June 7-11.
He’d been ill for months and his wife Sherry and his family saw it coming. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this painful time.
Thank you for being here with me this week in Mid- Week’s Leeward O‘ahu Voice. I’m lucky to have you, too!
Then, it’s straight into the Local Motion Surf Into Sum- mer the following weekend at
These are the elite adaptive surfers throughout the islands — and around the world — who come to compete in the heart of Waikīkī at yes, you guessed it — the iconic Queen’s surf break. You can
The hugely acclaimed shaper was the “guru, the man on the mountain, the shaper everybody knelt down before,” says Matt Warshaw.

“A genius when it came to designing and building big- wave guns, his shapes have been highly sought after for over half a century. One of Brewer’s biggest contribu- tions came during the late ’60s when he found himself in the center of the Short- board Revolution,” notes the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center.
Ala Moana Bowls June 11- 12. It’s historically been the largest amateur surf event on O‘ahu. Age ranges are huge — from 7 to 70.There are nine short and longboard divisions. Now, we pray for surf!
