that pay a family sustaining wage,” states Keala Peters, Chamber of Commerce of Hawai‘i’s executive vice pres- ident for education and work- force development.
The Hana Career Pathways program includes short-term trainings statewide that lead to industry credentials in the resilient sectors of healthcare, technology and skilled trades. The U.S. Department of Edu- cation is providing more than $2 million in funding for tui- tion this year.
Medical coding, pharmacy technician and certified nurse aid are examples of trainings offered in the healthcare sector for Spring 2022. Meanwhile, IT-related jobs offer industry certifications in cybersecurity and CompTIA. Skilled trades positions leading to employ- ment and apprenticeship path- ways include maintenance electrician, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air condition- ing) and carpentry.
The program is free for most eligible participants, since many of the trainings provide a 100% tuition sub- sidy to cover all costs. Eligi- ble applicants receive tuition assistance for courses and other training costs such as books and industry certifica- tion exam fees. Wrap-around services including college and career advising, referrals to community partners with supportive services and other financial assistance are also offered to students.
