House Preserves Legacy Of Distinguished Architect

High up on the slopes of Tantalus Drive, overlook- ing Diamond Head in the distance, sits one of Ho-
nolulu’s most outstanding examples of mid-century modern architecture: The Liljestrand House, which was built by renowned Ha- wai‘i architect Vladimir
Ossipoff in 1951-52 for Dr. Howard Liljestrand and his wife, Betty.

now thought
of as ... an architectural destination, in the beginning
it was simply a well-thought- out and well- planned home.”
“The house was built and sited to take advan- tage of the trade winds and mountain climate,” says Liljestrand Foundation executive director Kristi Cardoso, adding that Betty served as general contractor “so that she could oversee every aspect of construction and every penny spent.”
Cardoso continues, “The family remained lifelong friends with Ossipoff and every piece of furniture and art was selected or ap- proved by the architect. Throughout the years, no changes were made without consulting Ossipoff.”
“While Liljestrand House is now thought of as an iconic house and an archi- tectural destination, in the beginning it was simply a well-thought-out and well- planned home, built on a budget for a family,” says Cardoso.
The 5,000-square-foot house features floor-to-ceil- ing windows, bleached red- wood walls, stainless steel kitchen countertops, a float- ing staircase and an open- air family room. Outside is a kidney-shaped pool.
