MARCH 1, 2023
Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
The 46th annual Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic kicked off — as al- ways — on Presidents Day weekend and finished the following weekend.
“It is just a jersey color, but I’m stoked to be on the top because that’s where I want to be,” she says. “It’s where I feel I believe I can be, and it’s just a jersey col- or for now because the end- game is Trestles.
There were around nine categories — two-person, beach-boy-style surfing, the heavies (250 pounds and up), tandem and canoe surf- ing, long boarding, stand-up paddling and body board- ing.
“I’ m definitely proud of myself for just chipping away even though there are so many setbacks. Mo- ments like these make it all worth it.”
Spectators also got to see the art of the ancient alaia (standard-sized wood- en surfboard) and paipo (short wooden board used for bodyboarding) — not to mention the Supsquatch category featuring several surfers on a giant inflatable board.
Winning on the men’s side is defending world champion Filipe Toledo. At only 27, he has been on tour to get a coveted world title for a decade.
It was all to honor 89-year-old Richard “Buf- falo” Kalolo‘okalani Keau- lana — one of the world’s premier watermen.

“I’ m grateful to be here and in the position I am,” he says. “It is special to share cool moments with all these surfers. Hawai‘i is always one of those places where you want to get bet- ter, evolve and win events,

and this means a lot to me. “I worked super hard for this just training and surf- ing. Last year was fun, and I got what I wanted, which was my title, and I learned
a lot. When it comes to sit- uations like this, I feel like I’ m really well-prepared and ready for anything.”
Next up on the WCT, from March 8-16, is the
